Anaconda / Boa
Double Feature contains "Anaconda" and "Boa" "Anaconda:" Deep in the Brazilian Rainforest, a river barge makes its way up the Amazon. Aboard is a documentary film crew with a dream assignment: to track down the legendary Shirishama Indians - the people of the Mist! But during a violent storm, the crew rescues a mysterious stranger, Paul Sarone (Jon Voight), whose boat has stalled on the river. Charismatic and charming, Sarone professes a vast knowledge of the Shirishama and volunteers to lead the filmmakers directly to the elusive tribe. But the manipulative Sarone is actually a poacher in pursuit of his own mad dream: a lethal 40-foot anaconda, the largest and most vicious killer snake in the world! And so begins a terrifying journey into a nightmare as Sarone literally leads his unwilling followers into the jaws of death... an adventure few will live to tell. "Boa:" It is the dawn of the new millennium, and the world's first international highest security prison, designed to house some of the most dangerous criminals in history has been built deep in the Antarctic. Designated only as "Facility Number 1," the prison is considered entirely escape proof and those incarcerated there thought they were all alone - until now. What they are about to discover is that the icy tundra houses more than the deadly criminals - a giant and deadly man-eating snake that has been frozen solid for centuries has been awakened by the human presence, and understandably has a voracious appetite for human flesh. As the prehistoric slaughter begins, and people die gruesomely amid blood curdling horror, everyone left standing in the prison must band together to escape the paralyzing grip of the deadly creature.

Anaconda: Labor, Community, and Culture in Montana's Smelter City by Laurie Mercier,
Laurie Mercier's hard-hitting study of "community unionism" examines the tenacity of union loyalty and communal values within the confines of a one-industry town: Anaconda, Montana, home to the world's largest copper smelter and the namesake of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Mercier depicts the vibrant life of the smelter city at full steam, documenting the early history of the town and the distinctive culture of cooperation and activism that residents fostered in the 1930s and 1940s. Ultimately, their solidarity and discontent with the company converged in the successful 1934 strike and sustained five decades of devoted unionism. During the cold war years, Anacondans held to their communal values and to the union in the face of antilabor and anticommunist pressures, embracing an "alternative Americanism" that championed improved living standards for working people, rather than unlimited corporate power, as the best defense against communism. Mercier chronicles the bitter struggle between two rival unions that undercut the town's labor solidarity in the postwar years. She also explores how gender definitions shaped the nature and outcome of labor struggles. Mercier carries her investigation through the closing of the smelter in 1980. Underscoring the role of the community in molding working-class consciousness, Anaconda offers important insights about the changing nature of working-class culture and the real potential for collective action under the midday sun of American industrial capitalism.
